Opportunity in April: Outreach to Black disabled males with intellectual disabilities receiving special ed services in Virginia
What: This study looks at the experiences of African American male students with intellectual disabilities receiving special education services, their parents/caregivers, and school personnel on the transition process to adulthood
Who: We need participants from the following school districts: Chesterfield County, Hanover County, Henrico County, and Richmond City. We are looking for 3 person teams:
● A 18-22 year old Black youth with intellectual disability
● One of the youth’s parents/caregivers who is willing to participate in a focus group about their expectations for this youth’s abilities, their future, etc.
● A current/former high school teacher or transition coordinator who the youth feels knows him really well
How: We will be conducting 4 focus groups across the Richmond area. At each focus group, we will split the team into three groups: students, their parents, and the student’s teacher or transition coordinator. In these focus groups, we will need YOUR opinion on what works and what can help support educators in helping you and your child understand and participate in special education transition activities. Each focus group will run about 90 minutes. We will have a light lunch or dinner available depending on the date/time of the focus group.
When: While we encourage the young male, his caregiver/parent, and a school member to come together as a team to the focus group, we are offering multiple focus group dates and times if that is not possible. To register for a focus group, please use: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/self-determination-focus-groups...
